Michigan PG Nik Stauskas Receives Direction From Steve Nash

Jul 23, 2012 10:44 AM

Nik Stauskas has received words of advice from fellow Canadian Steve Nash.

"A couple years ago I went to Phoenix for a few days and worked out with him," Stauskas said. "One of my AAU coaches (Anthony Otto) grew up with Steve Nash and is really good friends with him. He took me to a Raptors game one time against the Suns, and the year after I went to Phoenix. He's a really nice guy."

Stauskas and Nash have kept in contact. Nash re-tweeted Stauskas a few weeks ago after the Michigan freshman tweeted about a good workout with the Wolverines.

"Working with him, you realize how much harder you have to work and learn," Stauskas said. "Just watching him shoot around and the ballhandling, it's amazing the stuff he can do. It motivated me to work harder. At this point there's nothing specific he can say -- it's more of just looking at the lifestyle he lives."

Michigan Wary Of Recruiting 'One-And-Done' Type Players

Jul 18, 2012 11:39 PM

John Beilein discussed the pros and cons of recruiting elite level players.

“You’ve got to recruit the best players that you can get,” Beilein said during a Wednesday interview. “If a guy is a Kobe Bryant (type), and he says, 'I’ve dreamed my whole life of going to Michigan, but I’m only going to be there one year,' that is a different thing for us than we’re in the top-10 list of this guy who’s a sure one-and-done.

“You can lose really good players slotted right behind him chasing that one. So we try to choose our battles very carefully, as to who we’re going to recruit that are really super prospects.”

Beilein acknowledged that some early departures are inevitable.

“We’ve had a two-and-done (Morris) and almost a one-and-done, as far as at least Trey considering it, with guys who barely made the top 100 (recruits), so it’s hard to tell who the one-and-done is and who isn’t,” Beilein said
